Suarez, Edgemon Student-Athletes of the Week


Wrestler Jordan Suarez and basketball player Kaitlyn Edgemon have been named Wayland Baptist University Student-Athletes of the Week.

Suarez, a freshman from Katy who is ranked third in the NAIA in the 136-pound weight class, took first place at the Hastings (Neb.) Open on Sunday, winning all three of her matches by tech fall by a combined score of 31-1. That included an 11-1 win in the championship match over 15th-ranked Tabitha Wood of Hastings.

Suarez improved to 14-3 on the season for the 10th-ranked Pioneers.

Edgemon, a sophomore (COVID freshman) from Littlefield, turned in two solid games for the No. 6 Flying Queens. Against Science & Arts of Oklahoma, the 5-foot-11 forward dumped in 23 points, second only to her career-high 27. Two days later in an 88-80 win over Texas Wesleyan, Edgemon scored 15 points and ripped down a career-high 15 rebounds. It was her third double-double of the season and fourth of her career. She missed a double-double by one rebound against Science & Arts.

Edgemon is third on the team in scoring, averaging 14.3 points, and first with 7.4 rebounds per game.
