AUSTIN – The Texas Historical Foundation, a 68-year-old preservation organization, has awarded a $5,000 grant to the Hutcherson Flying Queens Foundation for the Flying Queens Museum Project.

Funds will be used for digitizing game films from the 1950s to mid-1980s.

“On behalf of the Hutcherson Flying Queens Foundation, it is an honor to receive this grant from the Texas Historical Foundation,” said Linda Pickens Price, president of the Hutcherson Flying Queens Foundation. “Digitizing these game films will be the first project for the Flying Queens Museum. We are beyond excited thinking about sharing with future generations the history of this historic women’s basketball program and its impact on women’s lives that went beyond the game.”

The Hutcherson Flying Queens have played a significant role in the development of the women’s game and in the history of women’s basketball since 1910.

They were named “Trail Blazers of the Game” for their 131-game consecutive winning streak (1953-1958) by the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013. In 2019 the Flying Queens program from 1948-82 was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The THF grant was made from organization’s Jack R. Wahlquist Directors Endowment.

Sylvia Tillotson, president of the organization, said “Through projects such as this one, THF is able to help communities and organizations in their efforts to ensure that present and future generations of Texans know about their past. We are proud to partner with the Hutcherson Flying Queens Foundation on this project that will surely inspire the next generation.”
