Elaine Schulte Barnes was born and raised in Nazareth; the small Texas Panhandle town known for its record 24 girl’s state basketball championships (1977-2020). In 1976 Schulte played in the Nazareth Swiftettes’ first state appearance in school history but lost in the semifinals. She played on the Flying Queens from 1976-80; years packed with memorable college life experiences, hard work and dedication to the game, travel by private airplanes, and forever friendships. Elaine lives in Plainview with husband Joe and is enjoying retirement after 31 years in education. Daughter Sayla and husband Dan live in Austin; son Ethan lives in Lubbock. The Barnes enjoy spoiling their two-year-old granddaughter Paisley! Elaine serves as the board’s “feet on the ground” in Plainview to help the current Flying Queens as needed.
