The remarkable legacy of the Wayland Baptist Flying Queens will take center stage during a special two-day celebration September 27–28, bringing together former players, alumni, supporters, and friends of the Flying Queens.
The weekend begins Sunday, September 27, with a screening of If Not For Them: The Flying Queens Special Episode at the Cactus Theater, 1812 Buddy Holly Avenue in Lubbock. The screening begins at 2 p.m. and runs approximately one hour and 20 minutes.
Created by nationally recognized sportscaster Brenda VanLengen, the If Not For Them docuseries explores the origin story of women’s college basketball and the pioneers who helped shape the game. The Flying Queens Special Episode shines a spotlight on the remarkable story of the Wayland Baptist Flying Queens, whose success on the court and influence beyond it helped transform opportunities for women in athletics.
Through the stories of the women, coaches, and supporters who challenged expectations, embraced innovation, and opened doors for those who followed, the documentary celebrates a history that extends far beyond wins and championships. Their contributions helped advance women’s basketball and laid a foundation for generations of female athletes.
The celebration continues Monday, September 28, with the annual Hutcherson Flying Queens Foundation Golf Tournament at Plainview Country Club. The tournament, the Foundation’s primary fundraiser, helps provide financial support for the Flying Queens program while also supporting the Foundation’s work to preserve and promote the Flying Queens legacy.
Together, the documentary screening and golf tournament offer a special opportunity for the Flying Queens family to gather, reconnect, share memories, and celebrate a legacy that continues to inspire new generations.
