The Hutcherson Flying Queens Foundation (HFQF) is excited to announce the launch of a new Mentorship Initiative in 2026. This initiative will create meaningful connections between our esteemed alumni and the current student-athletes of the Wayland Baptist Flying Queens women’s basketball team, fostering a community of support that bridges generations.

The program is designed to provide current players with guidance, encouragement, and wisdom from those who have walked in their shoes. With the full support of Flying Queens Head Coach Jordan Vessels and a partnership with Wayland Baptist University, this effort seeks to build a powerful network to support our student-athletes on and off the court.

How the Program Works

Thoughtful Matching

Alumni can volunteer to serve as mentors, and current players will complete a survey to identify their interests and needs. This allows us to create one-on-one or small group matches based on shared experiences and goals.

A School-Year Commitment

The formal mentorship relationship runs for one school year, from August to May. We recommend connecting at least once a month, virtually or in person, with the option to renew the relationship at the end of the year.

Meaningful Support

Mentors can offer support in many ways, including career advice, encouragement during the season, and sharing insights on balancing academics and athletics. It’s a chance to build a lasting “big sis/little sis” relationship.

Get Involved

Share your professional and personal experience to help shape the next generation of Flying Queens. Your journey is a powerful tool that can inspire and guide a current student-athlete. Consider sharing your journey as a mentor!

Program Oversight and Next Steps

The Foundation will officially launch the program in April. Be on the lookout for an email letter from HFQF President Valerie Goodwin-Colbert and Alumni Profile Survey form.

In the meantime, here is a timeline for this first year:

  • Spring–Summer: Survey forms collected from interested alumni and student-athletes
  • July: Steering committee reviews submissions and matches alumni with student-athletes
  • August: Mentors and mentees are notified prior to the start of the 2026–27 academic year
