After starting Sooner Athletic Conference play with five home games in November, the Flying Queens hit the road in December for four conference games. The Queens started hot going 5-0 at home before dropping their first SAC matchup against Southwestern Christian University in Bethany, Okla., 76-86. The team rebounded and won the remaining three games in December, defeating Oklahoma City University (OCU), 77-52; Texas Wesleyan University, 63-52; and University of Science and Arts (Oklahoma; USAO), 71-60.
Over the first 12 SAC games three Queens are averaging in double figures led by forward Megan Nestor’s 19.3 points followed by forward Kaitlyn Jerden with a 15.5 point average and guard Linda Brice with 10.7 point average. Nestor also is averaging almost 12 rebounds per conference game. Guard Peyton North had two breakout games in December, scoring 19 points apiece against Oklahoma City University and USAO.
Queens Head Coach Jason Cooper lauded point guart Emily Sigala after the OCU game calling her “the unsung hero of many games, noting “She got us focused when we got off track on both ends of the floor.”
Two new additions to the Queens line-up, guard Teodora Popovic and forward Brooklyn Hurtado, have played key roles coming off the bench, providing the team with productive depth in the team lineup.
The Queens kick off the second half of conference play with nine games in January, starting with a home game against new SAC opponent College of the Ozarks on Wednesday, Jan. 2. The team has a total of 15 SAC games over January and February, closing out the regular season conference schedule on Thursday, Feb. 20 against Mid America Christian University at The Hutch.
