Kaylee Edgemon became the 51st player in Flying Queens history to score 1,000 points while leading No. 3 Wayland Baptist to a 66-52 victory over Southwestern Christian in Sooner Athletic Conference play Thursday night in Hutcherson Center.
In what was the home-opener for the Flying Queens (5-0, 3-0 SAC), Edgemon was one of three players in double figures, ending with 17 points and 15 rebounds for her fourth double-dip in five games. Fellow all-American Jenna Cooper finished with 13 points and 15 boards for her third double-double, while Edgemon’s freshman sister Kaitlyn secured 11 points and 11 rebounds for the first of her career.
It was the second straight game three Flying Queens posted double-doubles.
Kaylee Edgemon entered the game – her 73rd at Wayland – with 999 points, and it didn’t take the team’s lone senior long to reach the historic milestone, scoring Wayland’s second bucket of the game less than three minutes in.
The Eagles (4-2, 0-2) stuck close to the Queens much of the way, even leading 13-11 after the first quarter. Wayland took the lead for good with six minutes left in the second on a layup by Kaitlyn off an assist by her sis.
But the Flying Queens’ lead was just four, 28-24, at halftime. It wasn’t until an 8-0 run midway through the third that Wayland began stretching the margin a bit, taking a 48-39 after three.
The Queens went on to outscore the Eagles 18-13 in the fourth quarter, with the final 14-point spread matching their biggest lead.
Wayland, which also got 11 points from Payton Brown, won the battle of the boards, 59-42, including a 21-10 margin on the offensive end. That helped overcome a 35 percent (27-of-78) shooting performance, although that was still better than SCU’s 29 percent effort (20-of-68).
Both teams were cold from long range, with Wayland hitting 7-of-27 (26 percent) and the Eagles 5-of-28 (18 percent).
Some 400 fans were on hand for the game, the first official home event of the spring semester with masked, socially-distanced spectators.
Wayland has the weekend off after its first showdown with No. 5 Oklahoma City, which hasn’t played any games this season and only recently began practicing due to COVID-19, was postponed. The Queens next play Oklahoma-Panhandle State at 6 p.m. Tuesday back in the Hutch.
