January was a busy month in Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) play. The Queens finished 4-5 in SAC league play for the month and are currently tied with Southwestern Christian University for fifth place in the SAC with a 9-7 record. Overall the Queens are 13-9.

“January for the Flying Queens was a bit of a roller coaster,” said Head Coach Jason Cooper. “We are competing and working extremely hard. Even in games where the outcome isn’t exactly what we want.”

With one only senior, Jenna Cooper-Jackson, Cooper says many young players are gaining a lot of experience, which is exciting for the future of the program. He also adds that part of maturing as a basketball player means learning how important doing the little things are in having success.

Highs for the month include super sophomore Kaitlyn Edgemon scoring 24 points in the UNT-Dallas game on Jan. 21 to become the 53rd player to join the Flying Queens’ 1,000-point club. Edgemon only needed four points to reach the 1,000-point threshold, which she accomplished midway through the first period.

The Queens finished January with a solid showing against Oklahoma-Panhandle State, 109-70. Edgemon and Cooper-Jackson combined for 72 points as the Queens shot a blistering 58 percent from the field and hit 16 3’s, just two shy of the program record of 18 3s set during the 2019-20 season. Edgemon finished with a career-high 38 points. The game also featured a record-setting performance for Cooper-Jackson, who tied the Flying Queens record for 3s at 8 for the game and finished with 34 points, matching her season high.

The Queens will close SAC regular season play with six games in February. Their final game will be against league-leading Texas Wesleyan on Sat., Feb. 18, on Wayland’s homecoming weekend.

“We have our eyes locked in on a big finish to the conference season and a great showing in the SAC Tourney,” Cooper said. “I feel like we are coming together little by little.”
