Wintry weather continues to affect Wayland Baptist University athletics scheduling with more cancellations, but also an addition.

The latest casualties are the final regular-season basketball games for the No. 2 Flying Queens and Pioneers after Saturday afternoon’s doubleheader against Mid-America Christian was cancelled. Previously cancelled was Thursday night’s games against University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma.

The cancellations mean the next basketball games will be the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals, set for Feb. 23 for the women and Feb. 24 for the men. Pairings for the tournament are to be announced Sunday evening.

Unlike previous years, the higher seeded team will host every round of the tournament.

In baseball, the Pioneers have scheduled a four-game series against Bethany College, Kan., to replace a three-game series against Sterling, Kan. Now, WBU will host a pair of doubleheaders against Bethany at 1 p.m. Sunday and noon Monday.

Snow, extreme cold and dangerous travel conditions also has caused the cancellation this week of four soccer matches. Friday’s outdoor track and field meet at South Plains College in Levelland has been pushed back to Sunday.

Even the eSports schedule has been affected by weather. Monday’s Fortnight Battle Royale match was cancelled, and Tuesday’s Counter-Strike match against the Mavericks was postponed until Thursday.

Saturday’s football game at Oklahoma-Panhandle State in Goodwell, Okla., is still on. Kickoff is at noon. It’s the Pioneers’ first gridiron game in 3½ months after the season was halted last fall due to COVID-19.
