Today, we shine a spotlight on their extraordinary 131-game winning streak from 1953 to 1958. This remarkable feat was accomplished by five teams, comprising 31 players and two coaches, showcasing unparalleled talent and unwavering determination. Led by Coach Caddo Mathews, the streak began in 1953 with a resounding victory over Dowell’s Dolls from Amarillo 51-31. Despite a change in leadership, the Flying Queens remained undeterred as Harley Redin became head coach in the 1955-1956 season and sustained their winning streak in the subsequent years.
During this period, the Flying Queens clinched four consecutive Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Championship titles, with nine players earning AAU All-American honors. The streak finally came to an end in 1958 against Nashville Business College, 46-42, yet the team handled defeat with grace and style, setting an unmatched standard in collegiate basketball.
Since then, no collegiate basketball team, male or female, has surpassed this historic winning streak. In recognition of their skill and impact, the 1953-1958 Flying Queens teams were inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013 as “Trailblazers of the Game.”
Even after the streak concluded, the Flying Queens continued to excel, reshaping the landscape of basketball with their finesse and prowess. Today, their legacy endures, inspiring generations of young women on and off the court.
