In this spotlight, we highlight a significant piece of Flying Queen’s history—an official uniform worn by Darla Armes Ford (#35) from 1980 to 1984.

Throughout the years, the Flying Queens’ uniforms evolved alongside changing athletic trends. During this period, the team wore dark blue or yellow tops, with darker colors designated for away games. This uniform features a white jersey with a blue collar and yellow sleeves, complemented by a Texas patch marking Plainview, a proud representation of the state and Wayland Baptist University. The uniform was styled with blue shorts, a signature look for the team.

As a Flying Queen, Darla Ford had the opportunity to compete in several major tournaments, including the National Basketball Championship Tournament in Philadelphia and the Rainbow Wahine Classic in Hawaii during the 1981-1982 season. She also traveled extensively with the team aboard Beechcraft airplanes operated by Hutcherson Air Service. In her reflections, she expresses deep gratitude for her time as a Flying Queen, crediting Coach Wilson and her teammates for an unforgettable collegiate experience.

This uniform and others in the collection showcase the evolution of the Flying Queen’s attire over the decades. They are currently on display at the Flying Queens Museum in the Mabee Regional Heritage Center.
