In its first year being played in the “806” region, the Hutcherson Flying Queens Foundation Golf Tournament is honoring former Flying Queens coach Dean Weese along with raising funds to support the Wayland Baptist Flying Queens basketball program. The tournament is scheduled for Monday, October 7 at Shadow Hills Golf Course in Lubbock, Texas.
The Foundation’s golf tournament has been a primary fundraiser since the organization was founded in 2012. The tournament was moved from the Dallas area to Lubbock this year in an effort to appeal to supporters and others familiar with the Flying Queens program. Net proceeds from the tournament go to support the Flying Queens basketball program.
The tournament is a four-person scramble. The registration fee is $100 per person or $400 for a team, and includes green fees, cart, range balls, and lunch. Hole sponsorships and corporate sponsorships are available. Registration starts at 7:00 am and golfer will tee off at 8:00 am.
“An anonymous donor contacted the Foundation and asked if we would consider honoring Coach Weese as a part of this year’s tournament,” said Kathy Loter, 2024 golf tournament committee chair. “Our president Valerie Goodwin-Colbert reached out to members of our Board and Advisory Council and found overwhelming support to do this. At present, this designation is for this year only.”
Dean Weese was a legendary coach in the High Plains and Texas Panhandle who passed away on October 28, 2023 at the age of 88.
During his 42-year career, Weese’s record of 1,207-197 included six seasons (1973-79) as coach of the Flying Queens, amassing a193-30 mark including five appearances in the national AIAW tournament and two AAU titles.
